“Paper Girls” = Stranger Things + Ray Guns

The year is 1988 and after a surreal dream, Erin wakes in the dark to deliver papers on her bike. She’s cornered by thug guys and when it seems as if she has no way of escape up rides three other paper girls to her rescue (Tiffany, MacKenzie, KJ). They become instant companions and the timing couldn’t be better because before the sun rises their world changes, the sky turns pink and almost everyone on the planet disappears.

Part real-world with a drunk parent, house chores, video games and a Reagen election and part surreal Sci-fi with flying dinosaurs, archaic speaking stormtroopers and a spaceship/time travel machine this title is chock-full of
the beginning of a series goodness.

Written by graphic novel veteran Brian K. Vaughan, perhaps best known for the Saga series, there is such a great breadth of story and genuine human emotion that it holds promise for most readers. Illustrated with a cool retro style mixed with some trippy contemporary imaging and colors by Cliff Chiang the intermingling of art and text makes for a fabulous read.
