Angie Thomas‘ breakthrough debut, the bold and timely book, The Hate U Give is now a film to be released in October of 2018. Starr Carter is a sixteen-year-old who lives in the ghetto but goes to school in the burbs. She is conflicted with the variables in her life and torn between two worlds. This tension increases exponentially when Starr is at a party with her best friend Kahil. They are pulled over by the police and when Kahil reaches into the car to grab his hairbrush he is shot and killed. His murder becomes a top news story and he is called a gangbanger and thug, neither of which is true. Protests break out and Starr’s neighborhood becomes a war zone.

The book recieved critical acclaim and recieved several awards including, the William C. Morris Award, the Michael L. Printz Award and the Coretta Scott King Award. The book was banned in Katy, TX, and fans, writers, and educators fought back, reversing the ban.
