Netflix is ringing in 2016 with a new trailer for its original series, The Get Down. Created by Baz Luhrmann, director of the films The Great Gatsby, Moulin Rogue and Strictly Ballroom. His films are known for their intense visuals, fast pace and infusion of music. This show appears to continue his passionate storytelling style, this time focusing on New York in the 1970s. The show will be based on a group of South Bronx teenagers who are at the center of the three main music movements of the era, disco, punk and hip hop.
“I’ve been obsessed with the idea of how a city in its lowest moment, forgotten and half destroyed, could give birth to such creativity and originality in music, art and culture.” Baz Luhrmann – Variety magazine.
If the music and film techniques aren’t enough to entice you, perhaps you will be drawn to the painstakingly researched and designed costumes by Oscar award-winning costume designer, Catherine Martin. From traditional street wear, to disco glam, to punk grunge, Martin pays attention to every detail, head to toe.
The show stars: Shameik Moore, Justice Smith, Jaden Smith, Herizen Guardiola, Skylan Brooks, Tremaine Brown Jr., Jimmy Smits and Gaincarlo Esposito.
