The Graffiti World Mourns the Whitewashing & Impending Demolition of 5Pointz

Today is the day that a legendary landmark in the graffiti world has begun it’s death; 5Pointz in Queens was completely covered in white paint today.

Artists from around the world visited 5 Points to contribute to the painting that completely surrounds the 200,000 square foot building.

The name 5Pointz signifies the five boroughs coming together as one but, because of its reputation as an epicenter of the graffiti scene, the industrial complex has actually united aerosol artists from across the world. Legendary writers from Canada, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Japan, Brazil, and all over the United States have painted on the building walls, including Stay High 149, Tracy 168, Cope2, Part, and Tats Cru.

The building’s owner, Jerry Wolcoff thought that it would be easier to erase all of the art at once. The building is scheduled for demolition tomorrow and many were still attempting to find a way to save that artwork. Wolcoff claims that he will have a large painting space on the new structure that he is building there but it will never be the same 5 pointz.

Graffiti lovers have struck back by sprawling on the now white building. GENOCIDE and ART THIEF are a couple of family friendly examples.
